Coach's Corner: Everything's Faster

1 week ago By David Hinchliffe

What is the best preparation for Premier League cricket?

“You need focus if you are going to be Premier ready. ”

If you have not already noticed, West are Premier League in 2018. What can we expect to find after two seasons in the wilderness?

Speed.

Technique doesn't change that much the higher the level, but the pace goes up. Fast bowlers are faster and there are fewer slow medium trundlers. Batsman hit the ball harder and longer. Fielders get to more balls and get them in more quickly.

This is great news for the geezers that play Premier cricket because we can all improve our cricket-specific speed:

  • Run faster
  • Hit harder
  • Bowl quicker
  • Throw longer
  • Dive earlier and better
  • Better anticipation in the field
  • Fastest to adapt to different situations

You may not be the quickest in every category in the league. You may not even be the fastest in the club. That’s not important. What really matters is you improve on your own pace because it will prepare you for a higher standard better than anything else.

It’s not acceptable any more to just rock up to nets and hope you will somehow get faster just through batting and bowling.

You need focus if you are going to be Premier ready. You’re not in Kansas any more Toto.

What does that look like?

The gym is one place to get quicker. Drop a bit of body fat, get stronger and do some of those fancy power drills and jumps that the trainers are recommending. That’s all good. No need to complicate it. Just be a bit fitter and faster.

Faster nets.

But nets are also vital.

More importantly, how you approach a session when you turn up.

We have med balls, bands, heavy balls and skipping ropes to help increase speed and power. Spend some time in nets working on getting faster with bat and ball.

After Christmas, you can lay the ground work for faster fielding too. If you put some time in now, you’ll be fitter than last year and we can hit the hall with focus on covering ground, getting to the ball fast and throwing with power.

I understand your time is precious. But I also know you have it in you to improve, even in the limited time you have. So why not make the most of it by focusing on getting up to speed?

The gym is always open. Nets are every Monday and Wednesday night. Your coach is a WhatsApp away.

Invest in speed now and make your cricketing 2018. Fast.
