Regrettably, West of Scotland Cricket Club has fallen foul of a rule that remains in the Scottish Cup regulations for 2018, despite the fact it has been repealed for all WDCU competitions. As a result, the Club has been disqualified from this year's competition and Meigle will now take on Arbroath in the next round on Sunday 3rd June.
The rule in question requires a team to include a minimum of seven Scottish qualified players in the line up. Our selected team complied with the rule but one of the Scottish qualified players sustained an injury on the Saturday and had to withdraw. In the late evening panic to find a replacement, and given we were fielding three elevens on the Sunday, the rule was overlooked, it no longer applying to cricket in the west, and the replacement selected happened to be non Scots qualified. After the match, Cricket Scotland contacted the Club, having been alerted in the umpires' report to a possible failure to meet the rules. We checked the facts and confirmed to Cricket Scotland that we had, indeed, inadvertently, breached the rules. The matter was referred to the CS Competitions Management Group whose decision was to disqualify the Club from the competition, notwithstanding their acceptance that the Club made an innocent mistake.
The Club has apologised to Cricket Scotland and to Meigle CC for this mistake and we have wished Meigle well in the competition. Peter Drummond of Meigle CC has responded as follows: "It is a bit of a shame. Very understandable in the situation and we would agree totally unintentional. Your team were a joy to play against and approached the game in a great spirit. In today's smaller world it is maybe a ruling that could be revised by Cricket Scotland in the future. Wish you guys all the best for the rest of the season."
Having apologised to CS and Meigle CC, the Club now extends that apology to our own members and players. We very much regret that this administrative error has deprived the players of enjoying further success in the competition and has caused embarrasment to our members.
