Welcome to West - at last!
03 June 2010 - 16:41:43
I am pleased to welcome from Auckland, NZ., Neil Bisman, who arrived yesterday after a long flight around the globe to reach sunny Scotland.

Neil will be with us for the rest of the season. He is a right hand batsman and wicketkeeper, is 19, and plays for Ellerslie Cricket Club in the Auckland Grade 1 Premier League. It is good to have him with us. I know you will all look after him, especially as he settles in, and I wish him an enjoyable and successful season at Hamilton Crescent with McCrea FS West.

I understand that the mascot for Ellerslie CC is a famous racehorse called BONE-CRUSHER. Any thoughts on a mascot for West - answers on a postcard to Bobby Kettlewell!

It's been a busy couple of weeks for the three senior XI's at the club and this has meant big points to be gained for your fantasy league teams. A number of individuals have made large scores or taken wickets and this has helped lift some of our early strugglers up the table.

Youngie is currently the top rated batsman with 150 points though he has been boosted somewhat with 5 cheap wickets at Stenhousemuir. Despite being absent due to injury Leighton ranks as the top bowler with 115 points. Unsurprisingly Dougie leads the all rounders with 205 points, a remarkable effort so early in the season.

Some Weekend News
01 June 2010 - 19:58:00
14 runs against Carlton and 9 runs against Grange - a win is just around the corner!
From a cloudy, drizzly Northumbria I found out that McCrea FS West just missed out on a famous victory against the league leaders. Looks like really tidy bowling from Aftab (1-21 off 10), and wicket taking spells from Moneeb 4 for 35 and The Pro 3 for 45.
Skipper for the day Gregg put on 61 for the first wicket with Moneeb (64) and they were backed up by Burtty (12) Duncan Williams (22) and another excellent innings of 45 from Anjan Luthra only to fall short.

While this was going on, Partick scored a great win over Glasgow Accies at Hamilton Crescent. Partick 208 for 9 and Accies all out 197.

With Dougie, GG and Youngy back next week - along with summer - positive vibes are here again!

Under 18 Frank Smith Trophy Round 1 Match Report
31 May 2010 - 22:03:53
Friday the 28th may saw West Under 18s play their first match of the season. The encounter was a frank smithy trophy match, away to Ferguslie. After losing the toss, Anjan Luthra’s men were sent in, on what looked like a good deck. 14 year old Andrew Umeed and Anjan Luthra opened the innings and batted sensibly. After a solid start, the openers changed gears and increased the run rate significantly. After 18 overs the score was 162-0. Both boys lost their wickets in the same over; however, 180 still looked on with Alfie Lloyd coming in at 3. West finished on 177 and were aware that a good chase was to follow due to the short boundaries. Anjan finished on 90 and Andrew on 55.
Ferguslie opened their batting with Gregor Preston Jones and their Indian overseas amateur, P. Paramanik. Both looked solid, until a horrific, freak injury to Gregor required him to retire hurt. Umeed then picked up his only wicket when S Darroch was caught behind. Gavin Main, playing his first game for West Under 18s bowled tightly and picked up Rutnagurs wicket. The amateur continued to play his shots and was keen to win the match himself. However, Gurjit Sandhu picked up his crucial wicket, which was a reward for his line and length bowling. Once the amateur lost his wicket, a victory was assured, as West’s bowlers cleaned up the tail.
West’s disciplined bowling was supported by excellent fielding, with particular mention going to Anish Majhu, who fielded outstandingly.
Overall, a solid start to the season with another match on Monday.

Dougie is Heading South this Weekend
27 May 2010 - 18:08:41
Many congratulations to Dougie Lockhart on his well deserved recall to The Saltires squad for their games against Kent and Hampshire this weekend.

We shall obviously miss his talismanic presence but Dougie's commitment, enthusiasm and determination to play at the highest level he can achieve, should be the aim of all our cricketers.

Senior Fixtures for the Holiday Weekend
26 May 2010 - 19:51:06
McCrea FS West travel to Grange on Saturday for SNCL Week 5. This will be a tough encounter but with batting confidence high after last Satuday's superb run chase they have proved they have the ability to score runs.

Partick are at home to Glasgow Accies in the Brunton Miller Western Union (after playing GHK tomorrow night at Old Anniesland in The Western Cup - Surprise, Surprise I can now confirm this game is at HOME) while on Sunday, Hamilton Crescent entertain Queens Park in a Strathclyde Shield League match.

Its been a tough couple of weeks but there is no doubt the ablilities are there in all teams to produce positive results - and this weekend is an ideal time to start!

Junior Update
25 May 2010 - 22:29:11
West juniors enjoyed a successful weekend in the summer sun. On Friday the U11s and Under 15s notched a double over west end neighbours Glasgow Accies. The U11s elected to field first and, with the aid of three run outs including yet another direct hit from Jonty Godsman, held Accies to a modest 93 -8, net 253. The bowling was disappointing to say the least, 73 of Accies' runs coming from wides and no balls. Excluded from criticism are Murray Godsman (3-12) and Angus Guy (1-4). Godsman also led the way with the bat and West strolled to a comfortable win. 111-4, net 291.
Meanwhile, at New Anniesland, it was carnage as both teams' batting line ups spanked the opposition. The end result was a 57 win for West. West 230-3 (A Umeed 75 ret., A Ata 61 ret., G Main 35*). Accies 173 -10. (E Mazzucco 47, E Stewart 46, A Umeed 3-17, A Galloway 3-27, G Main 2-9).
Then on Sunday morning, West's tiny tots attended the Ferguslie kwik cricket festival and, for the third Sunday in a row, swept all before them, winning all three of their matches.
Monday night saw West U13s win their first match of the season, after a visit to neighbours Hillhead. Hillhead were reduced to 60-8, with the unlikely bowling hero being 9 year old Robbie McCallum. Robbie finished with 5-10, which was remarkable for a bowler who thus far had not taken a wicket in four U11 matches. Amazing what can happen if you actually bowl at the stumps, Robbie. Sandy McCallum, with 16 and Jamie Middleton, with 14, ensured a six wicket win for West.
This coming weekend will be the turn of the big boys. The U18s travel to Ferguslie on Friday for a Frank Smith Trophy cup tie and then host East Kilbride on Monday to start off their league campaign.

Run Fest at West as all 3 Senior Teams Draw a Blank Weekend
24 May 2010 - 17:29:53
On our first summer Saturday of 2010, Carlton and McCrea FS West produced a match of nearly 600 runs.
Put into bat, Fraser Watts and Preston Mommsen got Carlton off to a great start.
At 149 -2 Fraser was out for 77 after stands of 78 with Mommsen and 71 with Cedric English. The run rate remained high and Stevie Gilmour raced to 60 not out with great support from Dean (33) and Kerr (34 not out). 304 for 5 after 50 overs.
McCrea FS West always knew that they had a weakened bowling attack. Spegsy bowled 10 overs, 3 - 39 which was commendable in the circumstances. The overall fielding effort let the team down and aided Carlton in reaching the 300s.

At 26 -2 McCrea FS West's reply was stuttering but runs began to accumulate, firstly with a stand between Dougie and Burtty (26). Then Dougie put on 85 with Duncan Williams who made a superb 57.
Anjan Luthra joined Dougie and a stand of 77 was giving the home team a real chance of victory when Dougie was lbw for a magnificent 115. Anjan pressed on to reach a really good debut SNCL 50 but the target proved A Bridge Too Far and McCrea FS West's innings ended at 50 overs on 290 -6. Interestingly, Ross Lyons of Carlton bowled 9 overs for 70 runs, as West vigorously pursued their target,
and the following day was duly included in The Saltires team against The Outlaws in Edinburgh. (8 overs for 48)

This was a superb effort by the batsmen on a cracking day during which the spectators saw a great game of cricket.

Partick travelled to Titwood where despite 7 for 55 from skipper Jonny Graham, Clydesdale made 262. In reply, with Jats scoring 63 on his return from Amsterdam,
and Scott hitting 55, Partick amassed 225 but fell 37 runs short.

On Sunday Hamilton Crescent visited Shawholm in a Strathclyde League Match which they lost - so a blank weekend for the 3 West of Scotland teams.

Next weekend your roving reporter will be in Northumberland with his mobile switched off so I am sure that a guest correspondent can be persuaded to bring fresh eyes and words to the proceedings!
