McCrea West of Scotland travelled to Meikleriggs to take on Ferguslie in their McCulloch Cup Semi Final. Never an easy place to go but West had a strong team out and were feeling confident.
Ferguslie won the toss and decided they would take first use of the wicket and have a bat. West opened the bowling with club professional Kleinveldt. The first over was a good representation of how the night was going to go for the Roons with a wide and a six, the over going for 13. McNulty shared the new ball and even the normally metronomic struggled to find a good area. Kleinveldt managed to break the opening stand of 41 in the 5th over when Stafford (28) was caught at mid on by Chance. It was time for the two left armers to come on to try to stem the runs. Fennah and Chance bowling in tandem looked to bring West in to it. Ferguslie’s Henry was batting well and looking to anchor the innings. After 10 overs Ferguslie were still on top at 81-2 and looking to have a good platform to build from. West eventually managed to remove Henry for 30 with some good bowling from Oliver in the 15th over. This gave West the opportunity to turn the tide but unfortunately the out of character performance continued. Ferguslie continued to hit boundaries in the last 5 overs and looked like posting an imposing total. 2 wickets fell in the last over to leave Ferguslie 158/7 from their 20 overs. This 158 included over 20 wides from a West side that were far from the levels reached previously this season.
The chase started with skipper Young and, in form, Corner at the crease. Young made his intentions clear from the first ball of the innings by hitting it for 6 over mid wicket. Even after this positive start, West never quite kept up with the required rate. A solid start ended with Corner dismissed on the last ball of the 4th over with West on 26, After 5 overs West were 35/1 and looking in a decent position to build to the required total. The next 5 overs saw West put on another 30 runs with 2 more wickets falling including Young and Kleinveldt. This left the required rate at about 10 runs per over for the final 10 overs. With one short boundary this meant that by no means was the game over. Only another 5 overs were bowled before the rain came and the players had to leave the field. Ferguslie left the field in the much stronger position with West on 93/6. This would have left 66 required from the final 5 overs.
In the end the rain didn't stop which meant a 23 run win (D/L) for the home side. All that was left to do was shake hands and wish Ferguslie good luck in the final.
A frustrating night for McCrea West of Scotland that didn't see them perform as they expected but a good tournament performance to get to the Semi Final.
