Close match to start the summer
On Saturday 20th April the Partick XI started their pre-season with a friendly away to Helensburgh.
Helensburgh won the toss and elected to bat. Nadia Tolliday got her first wicket on debut for West of Scotland, trapping one of the openers LBW with some skilful swing bowling.
Despite the early loss of wicket, Helensburgh had a good start with some early season inconsistency from the bowlers. However, the introduction of Simon Brown helped slow the run rate down, followed by good spells of bowling from Ben Robinson and Mike Ashworth, with regular wickets being taken. Some sharp work by Amol Deshmukh saw two stumpings off leg-side wides.
Further spells from Brown and Tolliday towards the end of the innings kept things tight as Tommy Suslak came on to take three wickets, including one of off the final ball of the innings and two catches from skipper Chris Ross. This left Helensburgh 156 all out after 40 overs.
The chase was on and it started in entertaining fashion with Joban Cheema (13) pinch hitting: bringing a couple of boundaries early on. Duncan Sutherland (17) scored steady runs on his return to West colours. Kevin Singh hit a stylish 29 but eventually lost his wicket mistiming a shot, one of many in the top order who made a start but did not kick on further. With wickets falling at regular intervals at the other end, Rob Acheson (34*) held his nerve and saw the team home in the final over with Partick 9 wickets down.
Thank you to our hosts Helensburgh CC who gave us such a contest whilst playing the game in good spirit.
