Thank you, Rob Corner
After eight seasons at Hamilton Crescent, club stalwart and volunteer Rob Corner is moving on from the club. One of our most dedicated contributors both on and off the field, the club would like to put on record our thanks to him for his excellent service.
Rob first arrived at West in the winter of 2017 after moving to Glasgow for university. What started as shared training sessions quickly grew into something much bigger. He still looks back with a smile at that first winter’s workload: “I spent most of that first winter training four times a week in the indoor shelter! Can’t say I’ve done that in the winters since.”
Rob’s time at West is punctuated with standout moments on the field, including his first century away at Dumfries. “A great moment, only overshadowed by Jesse Mills smashing one in about 10 overs!”
Another of his personal favourite appearances for West was an improbable comeback: “We had a ridiculous fightback at Uddingston. They were 100 without loss chasing around 160, but we turned the screw and they collapsed. James Fennah took a catch on the boundary to win by just a couple of runs.”
And he fondly remembers one moment that captured the spirit of West of Scotland Cricket Club perfectly: “I’ll always remember Stuart Brown’s last game for West at East Kilbride. It was emotional, with plenty of runs before Stu finished off in style. It really showed me what West is all about. Camaraderie, spirit, and friendships.”
Rob’s volunteering journey began in 2019, the same year he became captain of the Partick XI, holding an impressive range of voluntary positions ranging from Social Media and Website Manager, Fundraising and Events Lead, Membership Secretary and even Ground Convener. “Each role taught me new skills, helped me get to know the entire Club, and definitely benefited my professional life too.”
And he leaves one message for those considering stepping forward: “I highly recommend getting involved. It’s a great way to give back to the Club that gives so much. West relies on volunteers, and the phrase ‘many hands make light work’ couldn’t be truer here.” For Rob, saying goodbye to West isn’t easy. “The Club has been a huge part of my life, and I’ve made so many friends and memories here.”
Rob isn’t stepping away from cricket, however. With a move to Linlithgow, his next chapter is already taking shape: “I’m moving near Linlithgow, where I played for a few years as a junior, so I think I’ll go back there. It’s such a lovely ground to play at.”
On behalf of everyone at West of Scotland Cricket Club, we would like to say thank you Rob, for your leadership and willingness to take on any task, and the countless hours you’ve given to help the Club thrive. Best of luck. You’ll always have a home at Hamilton Crescent.
