Saturday
The Allied Vehicles West of Scotland XI secured a hard fought two wicket victory in a low scoring encounter away to Prestwick. Having elected to field first, West made early breakthroughs but a recovery led by Ross Kennedy (37) and Fletcher Rao (34) guided the hosts to 110 for 3. West’s bowlers responded strongly, however, with the in form Graeme Etheridge claiming 2 for 21 to break through the middle order before Ali Sidhu produced another impressive spell, taking 4 for 16 to wrap up the innings and bowl Prestwick out for 134. The chase began poorly for West as both openers fell without scoring, leaving the visitors struggling at 12 for 2. Steven Richards then steadied the innings with a patient 46 from 82 balls rebuilding carefully before former captain James Fennah guided West over the line with an unbeaten 27, sharing composed partnerships with Tony Hulatt (13) with Etheridge (4 not out) to secure victory with 17 overs remaining.
There was another low scoring encounter in Glasgow as the Partick XI chased down 60 with five wickets in hand to beat St Ninians. Despite losing the toss and being asked to bowl, West controlled the game throughout St Ninians’ innings. Vice captain Oscar Fry struck early with 2 for 17 before spin dominated, with Callum Dutia taking 3 for 14 and a standout spell from the returning Ben Cole, who claimed 4 for just 3 runs from 5.1 overs as St Ninians were dismissed for 59. Chasing a modest target, West found themselves in trouble at 11 for 4 after a collapse that saw four of the top order dismissed without scoring. However, a vital 20 from opener Ramsay Brown steadied the innings, before unbeaten contributions from wicketkeeper James Scott (14*) and Andy Galloway (12*) guided the side home safely and maintain the Partick XI’s winning start to the season.
Meanwhile in Stirling, the Hamilton Crescent XI secured their first victory of the season with a superb team performance, defeating Mearns Challengers by two wickets. Three early strikes from Rory Kemp Smith (3 for 11) supported by further wickets from Santosh Kadavath (2 for 14) reduced Mearns to 38 for 5, before the controlled leg spin of Saaid Sufi (3 for 20) applied further pressure. Mamoon Hussain then wrapped up the innings by taking the final wicket with just his second ball, leaving Mearns all out for 120. West looked in control of the chase as Shaheer Hussain produced a fluent 51 from 38 balls, including a six to bring up his half century. However, a middle order collapse saw wickets fall regularly, leaving the hosts six down with 11 still required. Wicketkeeper Tanishq Charde held his nerve with an unbeaten 37, guiding Hamilton Crescent over the line in a tense finish to seal a much needed victory.
Sunday
West Women made it three wins from three in the Women’s Premier League 40 with a four wicket victory over Stewart’s Melville in a high scoring chase at Hamilton Crescent. After being asked to bat, the visitors made a strong start, reaching 70 before the first wicket fell, as Faatima Gardee top scored with 44. Jenna Stanton was the standout bowler for West, removing Gardee along with two further middle order wickets to finish with figures of 3 for 29, however, the Edinburgh side’s lower order added valuable runs to take them to 220 for 7 from their 40 overs. In reply, Maryam Faisal continued her excellent form with a brisk 58 from 62 balls, but it was captain Abbey Gore who anchored the chase superbly, striking a brilliant 64 from 52 deliveries, including eight fours and a six. Robyn Marment provided valuable support with an unbeaten 21 as West reached their target with eight overs to spare, maintaining their perfect start to the season and moving to the top of the Women’s Premier League 40.
Meanwhile, there was disappointment for the Sunday XI as their away fixture against Hillhead was abandoned after just eight overs due to rain. Having been asked to bowl first, the Sunday side, featuring two debutants for the club, made a bright start, reducing Hillhead to 30 for 1. Samuel McMillan claimed the only wicket of the innings before the weather intervened and brought an early end to proceedings.
