The Roon’d-up: Brilliant West down Dale at the double
The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2026 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest events on at Hamilton Crescent.
Saturday
Allied Vehicles West of Scotland became the first side to beat Clydesdale this season in a nailbiting one-wicket victory at Titwood. ‘Dale slumped to 22/3 after James Fennah’s second early wicket removed Scotland captain Richie Berrington, before fellow spinner Tony Hulatt made short work of the middle order taking 3-33. It was an excellent all round bowling display which included a disciplined 1-15 off 9 overs from John Strachan, supplemented by a first team debut wicket for Innes Algie, as Clydesdale posted 148/9 from their 50 overs. West looked likely to be another victim of the Southsiders as they struggled to 89/8 before Moneeb Iqbal and Hulatt took them to within 15 runs of victory when Algie joined Iqbal the crease. What followed was an incredible partnership in which Algie, showed Jack Leach-esque levels of batting patience, blocking the ball for a valuable 0*, whilst a phenomenal display from Iqbal (61* off 122 balls), rotating the strike at the other end, took West to victory with just a matter of balls to spare. The win, particularly satisfying as it was an turnaround of West’s one-wicket home defeat to ‘Dale earlier in the season, sees Ferguslie leapfrog Clydesdale to top of the league whilst West move into 3rd.
Meanwhile, the Partick XI were victorious over Clydesdale Titwood by 7 runs in another tight affair at Hamilton Crescent. Sam Jakobson (33) made a strong start for West as he shared 50 partnerships with both Rauhit Krishnan (22) and James Scott to help west to 104/3. But it was Scott who topped scored with a patient 63, supported by 31 from Chris Ross and 20 not out from Dave McNulty, helping our 2s to 226/8. Titwood made a strong start reaching 68 without loss until 3 wickets from Jonny Williams slowed their progress. Despite a 48 run seventh wicket partnership it was 3 late wickets from Santosh Kadavath which saw Titwood’s final wickets fall just runs from their target.
On a day when drama was in plentiful supply, there was yet more in Stirling as the Hamilton Crescent XI turned the form book on its head defeating Championship Two leaders Nunholm by 3 wickets. Asked to bowl first, a resolute Dumfries batting attack made a measured start but wickets from Rory Kemp Smith, Mamoon Hussain and Mossa Vakil drew West back into the match. Sravan Kirakumar wrapped up the innings with a run out leaving Nunholm on 209 all out. Shaheer Hussain (48) and “The Cobra” Rehan Mirza Ahmed (21) made their usual strong start reaching 69 without loss. Akshat Fondekar then joined Hussain at the crease and left it 120 runs later, scoring a determined 47 to anchor the innings before Vakil (12*) and Mamoon Hussain (15*) saw the chase home with just two and a half overs and three wickets to spare.
Sunday
On Sunday, West Women’s T20 Scottish Cup came to a close with a 6-wicket defeat to Carlton at Hamilton Crescent. After choosing to bat, West Women reached 72 all out before being bowled out in the 12th over as Maryam Faisal again top scored for West, scoring 34 off 30 balls, before being caught off the bowling of Agnes Foley. Foley took 4-13 as she tore through the middle order, only Robyn Marment showing any real resistance with 12 off 13 balls, before Ikra Farooq finished off the job taking three wickets in an over. Carlton completed their chase in the 17th over, with captain Maisie Maceira (20*) seeing the chase home, but that wasn’t before Nadia Tolliday threatened to change the game taking 2-13 from her 4 overs.
At Garscube, West Women’s 2XI lost by 3-wickets to Westquarter & Redding in the Women's Challenger League - West. After winning the toss, West posted 99/5 from their 20 overs, with Claire MacLeod top scoring with 33 off 24 balls at the top of the order. There were also runs for Ashu (13) and Inaya Hussain (12) as Katie Berlin Mano took 2-18 for Westquarter & Redding. In reply, Julie Badcock got the visitors off to a good start scoring 22 before being bowled by Cammy Sriram, but wickets fell around her as both MacLeod and Hussain got in on the act. But it was Mano who steadied the ship and saw them home with four balls to spare.
