The Roon’d-up: Champions West return to top flight

The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2025 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest goings on at Hamilton Crescent.

The West of Scotland XI return to the Western Premiership One next season after their championship glory was confirmed following a rained off game at Stirling County.

West made a strong start at Williamfield, as the home side failed to open the scoring until the fifth over, despite the early loss of Elliott Bunn to Dave McNulty. Regular wickets fell throughout the innings with Stirling failing to gather any momentum. Two wickets apiece for Oscar Shepperson and James Fennah as well as wickets for Tony Hulatt and Callum Dutia kept 3rd placed Stirling on the back foot until the weather intervened. The significant mid-afternoon rain across the west of Scotland caused no results throughout the Western District and that meant other clubs were unable to leapfrog them into first place. West will be joined by second placed Renfrew in the top division next season.

In Championship One, the rain meant that Partick were not able to take the top spot on the final day, despite bowling their opponents Williamfield out for 119. An attritional fifty for Nathan Hume held the visitors innings together, but wickets fell regularly around him. Opener Graeme Etheridge took a typically miserly 3-24 to leave Stirling’s second string floundering at 26/4 at one stage. Youngster Athsham Hussain was again the pick of the bowlers taking 4-46, including an outstanding close catch from Sam Jakobson to remove Ravi, but Partick were not able to open their reply and the no result means that Titwood win the league title.

The Hamilton Crescent XI reached 150/8 in their game with East Kilbride which had looked like being a close encounter in Stirling. Having chosen to bat, the home side struggled to 50/4 before an excellent 80-run partnership between in-form James Scott (43) and stand-in captain Manish Kaushik (43) revived the innings. But yet again rain intervened before the first innings could be completed and Hamilton Crescent finish their season 7th in Western Championship Two.
