The Partick XI saw off their traditional title rivals at Hamilton Crescent on Saturday amid the ongoing Glasgow heatwave.
West’s second XI beat Titwood by 4 wickets bolstering their start to the season. After winning the toss, Titwood chose to bat but struggled to build momentum, finishing on 207 for 9 in their 50 overs. Skipper Johnny Williams led from the front, taking 3 wickets to keep the visitors in check. Shlok Thaker hit a quick 38 from 41 balls before a late partnership between Rashid and Dhami added some resistance, putting on 46 runs for the eighth wicket to frustrate the home side. Young spinner Blake Stanton and opening bowler Graeme Etheridge also impressed, picking up two wickets each and keeping the pressure on throughout the innings. In reply, West got off to a strong start thanks to the composed batting of returning wicketkeeper Junaid Malik. Opening the innings, Malik played with confidence and class, scoring a valuable 64 from 93 balls. He was well supported by Rob Corner, who added a stylish 56, including several well placed boundaries. With more than 8 overs to spare, Blake Stanton and Chris Ross guided West over the line to complete a convincing chase.
Junaid Malik is congratulated by Matt Farr.
McCrea FS West of Scotland XI kept their unbeaten run going in the Western Premiership Two with a comfortable six-wicket win over Greenock at Glenpark. West’s bowlers got off to a flying start, with skipper Oscar Shepperson and new-ball partner Dave McNulty tearing through the top order to leave Greenock reeling at 14 for 3. Despite more bowling heroics from Callum Dutia, who took 3/40, Greenock fought back to post 213 for 8 from their 50 overs, with Will Jenkins’ patient knock of 43 anchoring the innings. In reply, overseas wicketkeeper Larvet Masunda looked in fine touch once again, racing to 51 off just 47 balls. He shared a crucial 86-run partnership with Joe Carrasco, who chipped in with 39. With the platform set, John Oliver (37*) and Jesse Mills (39*) steered the team home, sealing the 1st XI’s third league win on the bounce with five and a half overs remaining.
Meanwhile, the Hamilton Crescent XI were beaten by The Tryst in a topsy turvy affair in Stirling. Batting first, Hamilton Crescent’s top order was quickly under pressure with the loss of Rehan Ahmed Mirza and Manish Kausik left them struggling at 8/2 early on. Saaid Sufi (24), Sarwar Mohammad (23), and George Clarke (20) all made contributions, but they couldn’t handle the combined threat of Rainsforth and Bhat, who each took three wickets to leave Hamilton Crescent struggling, finally reaching 136 all out. Lal and Haider, began The Tryst’s innings with aggressive intent, putting on a rapid 71-run partnership. However, the momentum shifted quickly as they collapsed to 98 for 6, with Mamoon Hussain claiming his first five-wicket haul of the season to give the home side hope. But a gritty display from the lower order pushed Stenhousemuir’s 2s over the line, securing a two-wicket victory with more than 10 overs to spare.
The Women’s XI were beaten at home by Stewart’s Melville at Hamilton Crescent on Sunday. The Edinburgh side, who plundered 320/1 against Murrayfield last week, were restricted to a more respectable 160/8 from their 30 overs. Cammy Sriram was the pick of West’s bowlers taking 3/38 and Poppy Winch, in only her second game of cricket, successfully filled in as wicket keeper taking two catches! The home side made a quick start with the bat, reaching 39/0 off their first four overs, however regular wickets followed the loss of Jenna Stanton for 21, and West completed their innings on 113 all out - a 47 run defeat.
The Sunday XI faced off against Ferguslie in a sun-drenched encounter at Meikleriggs. The home side posted a competitive 206/6 from their 40 overs, with Abhunav Joshi leading the bowling attack, taking 2/28. Additional wickets were shared between Swami Ananthanarayanan, Mamoon Hussain, Athsham Hussain and Ali Maddock. In response, Mamoon Hussain continued his excellent form with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 72*. He was well-supported by Ananthanarayanan (28) and Faris Aslam (26), but despite their efforts, West fell short, losing by just 10 runs.
Coming up this midweek, Partick host Victoria in the Western Cup on Tuesday (6pm start) whilst the McCrea FS West of Scotland XI visit Stenhousemuir on Wednesday (6pm start) to resume their McCulloch Cup campaign.
