The Roon’d-up: Partick march on despite mixed fortunes elsewhere
The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2026 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest events on at Hamilton Crescent.
Saturday
Prestwick tore up the form book with a four wicket victory over Allied Vehicles West of Scotland at Hamilton Crescent. Having elected to bat first, West made a positive start through Andrew Appleton (23) and Mekyle Pillay (20), but regular wickets stalled the innings as the hosts slipped to 97/8. A determined lower-order recovery, led by James Fennah (31) and an unbeaten 23 from Oscar Fry, helped West post 159 all out. West made the perfect start with the ball as Pillay removed Richard Bartsch with the first delivery of the innings, but Prestwick responded with a composed chase. Contributions from opener Ross Kennedy (33), Gaurish Jadhav (48) and Thomas Fleet (31*) guided them to victory with more than 15 overs to spare. Pillay finished with figures of 3 for 41, while Fennah claimed 2 for 29. The defeat sees West slip to fourth in the Premiership One table, while Prestwick's second win of the season moves them clear of Renfrew at the foot of the standings.
The Partick XI continued their impressive run of form with a convincing seven wicket victory over St Ninian’s at the Henry Thow Oval. Despite electing to bat, the home side found runs hard to come by against a disciplined West attack, with captains old and new, Jonny Williams and Chris Ross, each claiming three wickets as St Ninian’s were dismissed for just 123. In reply, Innes Algie produced a superb innings of 58 from 46 balls, including 12 fours, to put West firmly in control of the chase. James Scott (28*) and Andrew Galloway (13*) then guided Partick home, reinforcing their third place in the Championship Division One table.
The Hamilton Crescent XI, meanwhile, suffered an agonising 14-run defeat to Mearns 2nd XI at Bellahouston Park. On a challenging surface, the hosts made a solid start, reaching 40 without loss before Mamoon Hussain sparked a fightback with figures of 2 wickets for just 11 runs from his eight overs. Captain Moosa Vakil and spinner Saaid Sufi then claimed three wickets apiece as Mearns were dismissed for 153. In reply, Shaheer Hussain continued his fine run of form with 47 from 52 balls, while Tanmay Nikam produced a determined 27 to keep West in contention. However, despite their efforts boundaries proved hard to come by and Hamilton Crescent were unable to find the required runs before the overs ran out. The defeat sees West slip to seventh in the Championship Division Two table.
Sunday
It was a tough afternoon for West of Scotland Women’s XI as they suffered a 211-run defeat at league leaders Carlton. Having lost the toss, West were asked to bowl and found themselves under pressure from the outset as opener Ikra Farooq (67) laid the platform before captain Samantha Evans produced a superb unbeaten 144 from just 91 balls. Olivia McGhee and Cammy Sriram each claimed two wickets, but Carlton amassed an imposing 353. Chasing such a daunting target was always going to be a difficult task, although Maryam Faisal (29) and Lucy Green (19) offered resistance as West were eventually dismissed for 142. The defeat sees West slip to third in the Cricket Scotland Women’s Premier League 40 table, while Carlton maintain their 100 per cent record at the summit.
Meanwhile, West’s Sunday XI completed a third victory over Ferguslie this season with a 63-run win in Paisley. After being asked to bat in warm conditions, West posted an impressive 225 for 6 from their 40 overs, with Swami Ananthanarayanan scoring 40, Akshat Fondekar adding 34 and Faris Aslam finishing unbeaten on 21. The standout performance, however, came from debutant Muhammed Arslan Zubair, who marked his first appearance with a superb half-century before retiring not out. In reply, excellent fielding, including sharp slip catches from Fondekar and Ali Maddock, backed up disciplined bowling from opening pair Dheeraj Agarwal and Rizwan Hussain before Dhruvesh Prajapati took two wickets as Ferguslie were dismissed for 162, leaving West comfortable 63-run winners.
