The Roon’d-up: Weather reigns as Grange triumph

The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2025 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest goings on at Hamilton Crescent.

Another weekend of cricket was heavily affected by rain as six of seven scheduled fixtures, including Sunday’s Scottish Cup clash with Heriot’s, failed to reach a conclusion.

The only result saw West of Scotland Women’s XI defeated by four wickets by Grange in a rain-reduced contest in Edinburgh. West made a bright start after winning the toss and opting to bat in a 25-over-a-side match. Abbey Gore led the way with a fluent 57* from 48 balls, anchoring the innings superbly. She was well supported by Olivia McGee (25) and opener Jenna Stanton (24) as West posted a competitive total of 165/6. Grange, however, came out firing in response. They reached 76/2 in the first 10 overs, despite West striking an early blow as Sunna Asghar dismissed Rosanna Walker for a duck and went on to finish with figures of 2/25. But Grange skipper Catherine Edwards steadied the chase with an excellent 62, and her side completed victory with 10 balls to spare.

Dark clouds threatened Hamilton Crescent as Hughenden started their innings on Saturday.

Another rain-drenched Saturday brought a complete washout for all of West’s senior sides. McCrea West of Scotland’s fixture at Helensburgh and Hamilton Crescent’s visit to Meikleriggs were abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy overnight rain. Partick did manage some play at home against Hughenden, however, they struggled to 112 all out in tricky conditions. Rehan Ahmed Mirza (11), Avaneesh Yilapavanam (16), and Andy Carswell (12) were the only batters to reach double figures as Hillhead’s 2XI’s bowlers took full advantage with the accurate Adarkar claiming 4 for 9 and Das 3 for 21. Hillhead’s chase was cut short at 17/2, with Santosh Kadavath taking both wickets, before heavy mid-afternoon rain around 3pm.

Coming up this midweek, the Midweek XI visit Renfrew on Tuesday whilst the West of Scotland XI continue their McCulloch Cup campaign at Uddingston on Wednesday - both starting at 6pm.
