The Roon’d-up: West dodge the rain on mixed weekend
The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2026 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest events on at Hamilton Crescent.
All of this weekend’s five games managed a result despite wet conditions in the west of Scotland.
Saturday
The Allied Vehicles West of Scotland XI were defeated on DLS away to M8 Driving Ferguslie. Having won the toss and elected to bat, West made a positive start, with opener Joe Carrasco scoring 45 before becoming one of four wickets for Michael English. Overseas all rounder Mekyle Pillay then played a fine unbeaten innings of 69 from 79 balls, while the returning Moneeb Iqbal added 31 as West posted a competitive 226 for 7 from their 50 overs. Ferguslie responded strongly, led by an unbeaten 50 from Umayr Davids, before rain brought an early end to proceedings at Meikleriggs with the hosts on 146 for 3 and comfortably ahead of the required DLS target. The victory maintains Ferguslie’s perfect start to the season, while West slip to fourth place in Premiership One.
The Partick XI were also defeated, falling 27 runs short against Bothwell in a rain affected encounter at Hamilton Crescent. Having been asked to bowl first, West faced a strong start from the visitors, with Ahtsham Hafiz striking 88, including three sixes. However, spinners Innes Algie (4 for 38) and Jesse Mills (3 for 17) dragged the game back in West’s favour, helping dismiss the Lanarkshire side for 173. Chasing in difficult conditions, Partick lost wickets at regular intervals, although Mills held the innings together with a patient 40 from 52 balls. Three wickets apiece for Iain Cran and Rohail Jahan-Zeb ultimately proved decisive as West were bowled out for 146, slipping to fourth place in the Championship Division One table.
Meanwhile, there was success for the Hamilton Crescent XI in Stirling, however, as they defeated local rivals Hillhead 2 by 63 runs. The 3s were asked to bat having lost the toss, but in form openers Shaheer Hussain (32) and Rehan Mirza Ahmed (14) made a solid start, before support from Akshat Fondekar (36) and Swami Ananthanarayanan (26) built a strong 198/9 from 40 overs. A strong all round bowling performance saw West to victory, with two wickets each for Hussain, Ananthanarayanan, Mamoon Hussain and Saaid Arshad Sufi limited Hillhead’s second string to 135 all out. The result lifts Hamilton Crescent to 7th in the Championship Two table.
Sunday
West Women progressed to the second round of the T20 Scottish Cup with a convincing seven wicket victory over RH Corstorphine Women. Having lost the toss and been asked to bowl, West faced a strong challenge from the visitors’ top order, with Bronwyn Sumption finishing unbeaten on 69 and Alyssa Erxleben adding 49 as RH Corstorphine posted an imposing 141 for 3 from their 20 overs. In response, West produced an excellent batting performance to chase down the target with more than two overs to spare. Jenna Stanton led the way with a superb 58 from 45 balls, while the in form Maryam Faisal contributed 33 from 25 and captain Abbey Gore added 29 from 27 as West completed an impressive victory. West will now face Carlton Women in the second round later this summer.
The Sunday XI secured a convincing 66 run victory over Ferguslie in an entertaining encounter in Paisley. Answering a late call up from the captain, Saturday’s Hamilton Crescent hero Swami Ananthanarayanan stepped in to anchor the innings with an unbeaten 50, while debutant Tanmay impressed with 31 and Nakul Jain provided a late flourish, blasting 25 from just 13 balls to help West post 184 for 9 from their 40 overs. Jain then made an immediate impact with the ball, taking three wickets in his opening spell, while wicketkeeper John McDermott produced a superb performance behind the stumps with three stumpings. Youngsters Sam McMillan and Thomas Kitchen also contributed strongly with the new ball as West maintained control throughout to run out comfortable winners.
