The Roon’d-up: West topple Ferguslie to continue run
The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2026 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest events on at Hamilton Crescent.
Saturday
Not content with ending Clydesdale’s unbeaten run last weekend, Allied Vehicles West of Scotland defeated M8 Driving Ferguslie by six wickets on Saturday to unseat the Paisley side from the top of the Premiership One table. Graeme Etheridge starred with the ball for West, taking figures of 4 for 26, including a devastating three-wicket over that left Ferguslie reeling at 11 for 3. David Stafford (48) and Ibrahim Faisal (49) offered some resistance for the visitors, but another impressive spell from youngster Innes Algie (2 for 36), combined with miserly bowling from John Strachan and Anthony Hulatt, restricted Ferguslie to 161 all out. West were reduced to 60 for 3 when Steven Richards (21) departed, but partnerships between Mekyle Pillay (45) and Junaid Malik (17), followed by Pillay and Moneeb Iqbal, whose unbeaten 22 came from just nine balls, guided West to victory with more than 13 overs to spare. The result returns Clydesdale to the top of the Premiership One table, while West close the gap on second-placed Ferguslie.
The Partick XI, meanwhile, continued their impressive run of form with a 66-run victory over Bothwell in South Lanarkshire. Tanishq Charde, stepping up from the 3rd XI, top scored for the visitors with 48 from 66 balls, including seven fours. There were also valuable contributions from Dave McNulty (37), Andrew Galloway (31) and Jonny Williams (21), who was run out in bizarre fashion midway through the innings, as West posted 218 all out. In reply, Ahtsham Hafiz continued his impressive form for Bothwell with 34, but it was West's bowlers who dominated. McNulty claimed 3 for 18, Callum Dutia 3 for 22, Gurjit Singh 2 for 37 and Williams 2 for 43 as Bothwell were dismissed for 152 in the 41st over, falling 66 runs short of their target. The victory keeps Partick firmly in contention at the top of the Championship Division One table, although wins for both Whitehaugh and Titwood mean they remain in third place.
There was less success for the Hamilton Crescent XI, who suffered a disappointing 70-run defeat to Hillhead 2nd XI at Hughenden. After asking the home side to bat first, Rory Kemp Smith (2 for 26) made an early breakthrough by dismissing James Thornhill for 1, but former West player Jim Lindley-Dawe anchored the innings with a top score of 39. Despite two wickets apiece for youngster Sam McMillan and captain Moosa Vakil, a late flurry from Hillhead helped them post a challenging 185. It proved a difficult chase on a testing surface, with West bowled out for just 115. Shaheer Hussain once again top scored with 21, while Vakil added 14, but there was little resistance from the middle order. The defeat leaves Hamilton Crescent seventh in the Championship Division Two table and looking over their shoulder, with both Hillhead 2nd XI and Anniesland hoping to leapfrog them in the closing weeks of the season.
Sunday
On Sunday, West Women were beaten by 125 runs at Hamilton Crescent by a strong Carlton side. Having elected to bat, Carlton lost the early wicket of Sarah Beith, lbw to Jenna Stanton, but a century partnership between opener Holly Sladen (43) and Sophie Thomas (58) put the Grange Loan side firmly in control. An impressive spell from Nimrita Samra, who finished with figures of 4 for 34, helped rein the visitors back in, however, as Carlton were eventually dismissed for 257. Chasing a challenging target, West were unable to build any sustained momentum and were bowled out for 132. Maryam Faisal struck a run-a-ball 29, while Robyn Marment remained unbeaten on 39, but Agnes Foley's figures of 4 for 24 ensured the points went to Carlton. The defeat sees West slip to fifth in the Women's Premier League 40 table.
At Hughenden, the Sunday XI also suffered defeat, going down by five wickets to Hillhead in a friendly. Having been asked to bat, West made a difficult start, slipping to 3 for 3 before a brief recovery, led by Sam McMillan (12) and captain Rizwan Hussain (13), restored some momentum. However, the innings never truly recovered, with West eventually dismissed for just 72. In reply, Andrew Strong struck in the opening over to finish with figures of 1 for 16, while Dheeraj Agarwal (1 for 19) and Adhrit Singh (1 for 10) also claimed wickets. However, with too few runs to defend, Hillhead reached their target with five wickets in hand and 18 overs to spare.
