The Roon’d-up: Clean sweep Saturday
The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2025 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest goings on at Hamilton Crescent.
West’s Saturday’s sides returned to action with three wins against challenging opposition.
In their first Saturday action since 17 May, the McCrea West of Scotland XI won a close encounter with Glasgow Accies by just 14 runs. Opener Sam Page anchored the innings with a superb 72, incluing 8 fours, as West set the Accies a challenging total of 211. He was supported by regular contributions throughout the batting order, including 29* from John Strachan, 26 from wicketkeeper Larvert Masanda and 22 from skipper James Fennah. In response Glasgow Accies could only reach 196, with three wickets a piece for both John Oliver and Tony Hulatt. The win keeps our 1s joint top of the table with four wins out of four played so far.
Partick also ran out winners away to Shimla Cottage Langloan as they enjoyed a successful run chase with five wickets to spare. A man of the match bowling performance from Oscar Fry (4-34) ripped through the home side’s batting attack, reducing them to 7/3. Despite a rebuild, including 23 for James Hamilton, Partick’s bowler took regular wickets, with 3-24 for youngster Athsham Hussain and an eyecatching 3-12 from stand in captain Jesse Mills, restricting the home side to 112 all out. The 2s were efficent in response, reaching their total in the 21st over. Andy Appleton top scored with 35, but it was Mills and keeper Rob Corner who saw them home leaving Partick third in the current league standings.

In Stirling, the Hamilton Crescent XI ground out a 20 run victory in a topsy turvey affair with Marress. After losing the toss, skipper Moosa Vakhil was left with another headache within two balls with opener Rehan Mirza Ahmed retiring hurt having been twice struck on the foot. Despite a battling run a ball 42 from Sarwar Mohammad the 3s slumped to 68/7 until a game changing 8th wicket partnership from Gregor MacDowall (20) and man of the match Faris Aslam (whose 64 from 55 balls included 8 fours and 2 sixes) as they were bowled out for 170. Maress made a strong start to their chase, reaching 98/2 at one stage, anchored by 60 from Michael Ingram, but tight bowling from Mohammad (1-18) and Aslam (2-27) began to turn the tide and wickets began to fall. Mamoon Hussain took advantage taking 3-29 as Maress were bowled out for 150.

On Sunday, West’s womens side were beaten by 8 wickets on a tricky trip to a combined Watsonians and Dumfries team. Opener Maryam Faisal made a good start with 69 from 63 balls, however wickets fell at the other end throughout her innings. Jenna Stanton (26) showed some resistance, as West posted 129/5 from their reduced 20 overs. Watsonians/Dumfries were however always in control of their response with openers Megan McColl (71) and Niamh Muir (37) taking them within ten runs of victory. Despite Abbey Gore taking both of their wickets, West were beaten with more than seven overs remaining.
This midweek, Partick take on Anniesland in the Greenwood Trophy at home on Thursday, a 6pm start.
