The Roon’d-up: Heriot’s Progress But Women Take Win in Grampian

The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2025 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest goings on at Hamilton Crescent.

After two washouts, the West of Scotland XI finally got their Scottish Cup clash underway against Heriot’s but it was the CS Scottish Cup holders who made up for lost time with a dominant 215-run win.

Despite losing the toss, Heriot’s came out firing, racing to 79 runs in the first ten overs for the loss of just one wicket. The batting lineup continued to pile on the pressure throughout, with fifties from Josh Elliott, wicketkeeper Douglas Voas, and captain Lloyd Brown underlining the Cup holders’ control. West’s MS Dhillon provided a brief spark with an excellent spell of 4 for 45 from his ten overs, including two wickets in two balls in the 39th over. Set a revised target of 300 via the DLS method, West’s batting lineup struggled to gain a foothold against a disciplined and experienced Heriot’s attack. James Dickinson claimed 4 for 22 and Ross Brown 3 for 21, as wickets fell steadily. Joe Carrasco top-scored for West with 17. Congratulations and best wishes to Heriot’s, who now progress to next week’s quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, West of Scotland Women’s XI enjoyed a successful outing in Huntly, defeating Grampian Thistles by nine wickets (DLS). Grampian looked well-set thanks to a commanding 154-run third-wicket partnership between Emily Henderson (70) and Chloe McLeod (62), but West’s bowlers responded with discipline. Emily Norris led the way with figures of 3 for 35, while Olivia McGhee chipped in with 2 for 40 to help restrict the hosts to 182 for 8 from 30 overs. Rain saw the target revised, but opener India Harrison continued her impressive run of form with a composed 70* from 64 balls, anchoring the innings. She was supported by Laavanya Varadarajan (15) and McGhee, who capped off a fine all-round display with an unbeaten 12.

Frustratingly, Saturday brought yet another complete washout for West of Scotland’s senior teams, with no play possible across any of the scheduled fixtures. The 1st XI’s trip to Kilmarnock, the 2nd XI’s home game against St Ninian’s, and the 3rd XI’s away match at GHK were all cancelled without a ball being bowled. Here’s hoping the weather finally turns in our favour next weekend. Weather forecasts are looking more promising, so fingers crossed!

Ahead of that, the Midweek XI visit Milngavie on Tuesday whilst Partick host Woodfarm on Thursday - both starting at 6pm.
