West enjoyed a successful weekend across the club with four of our six sides claiming victory.
Saturday
The Allied Vehicles West of Scotland XI opened the weekend with a convincing six wicket victory away to Renfrew. Having won the toss and elected to bat, the home side made the worst possible start as Muhaymen Majeed was dismissed from the first ball of the match, caught by Dave McNulty off the bowling of Mekyle Pillay. Ali Hamza and Adam Malik responded with a century partnership for the second wicket, adding 103, but a disciplined West performance gradually turned the game. Excellent spells of swing bowling from Graeme Etheridge, who finished with 4 for 29, and Ali Sidhu, who claimed 4 for 43, ripped through the middle and lower order to bowl Renfrew out for 156. West made a strong start to the chase, with captain Sam Page (33) and Joe Carrasco (47) sharing an opening stand of 87. Steven Richards then anchored the innings with an unbeaten 27, while Pillay added a further 25 to guide West to a comfortable victory.
Chris Ross made a starring performance for the 2s
The Partick XI maintained their winning start to the season with a three wicket victory over Renfrew’s 2nd XI. On a changeable afternoon in Glasgow, Partick lost the toss and were asked to field first. Despite some aggressive hitting from the visitors, wickets fell regularly throughout the innings, with Renfrew captain Sunil Chopra top scoring with 50. Youngster Innes Algie produced an impressive spell of spin bowling to claim his first five wicket haul for the side, well supported by the seam attack of skipper Chris Ross, Santhosh Kadavath, Gurjit Singh and Matt Farr, as Renfrew were dismissed for 108. In reply, it was again the two captains who led the way. Chopra starred with the ball, taking 5 for 36 from his 10 overs, while Ross anchored the chase with a determined 53. Although West lost wickets to the spin of Chopra and others late on in their innings, they held their nerve to reach the target, with wicket keeper James Scott guiding the hosts over the line with three wickets and plenty of overs to spare.
In Championship Division Two, the Hamilton Crescent XI suffered a seven wicket defeat to Langside on a difficult batting surface at Albert Park. Having been asked to bat first, the 3rd XI lost early wickets, slipping to 21 for 5. Shaheer Hussain and captain Moosa Vakil both made 11 as West were eventually bowled out for 69, with Raja (3 for 18) and Afzal (3 for 9) doing the damage for the hosts. Defending a modest total was always going to be a difficult task, and despite wickets from Vakil, Saaid Sufi and Adhrit Singh, Langside reached their target with seven wickets in hand and 25 overs to spare.
Sunday
Renfrew made the return trip to Hamilton Crescent in the Scottish Cup on Sunday, but the result remained the same as West claimed a commanding 171 run victory to progress to the third round. A superb unbeaten century from overseas all rounder Mekyle Pillay laid the foundation for the win, with the opener striking ten fours and two sixes in a brilliant 105 not out from 116 balls. Support came from captain Sam Page, who added 52, as West posted an imposing 262 for 4 from their 50 overs. In reply, Renfrew never built any meaningful momentum in the chase as West’s bowlers kept control throughout. Graeme Etheridge continued his excellent form from Saturday’s league meeting, claiming another five wicket haul to finish the weekend with nine wickets against Renfrew. Despite 27 from Ali Hamza, the visitors were unable to threaten the target as West sealed victory with more than 20 overs to spare.
West Women maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 44 run victory over Watsonian in Edinburgh. Batting first, West made a positive start thanks to another fluent innings from Maryam Faisal, who struck a quickfire 36, including seven fours, before being dismissed by Tess MacDonnell. Olivia McGhee then anchored the innings with a composed 34 as West closed on 166 for 9 from their 40 overs. In reply, Watsonian opener Anne Sturgess offered early resistance, finding the boundary regularly on her way to 54 before she was caught off the bowling of captain Abbey Gore. However, disciplined displays from the West attack kept the hosts in check throughout the chase. Nadia Tolliday finished with figures of 2 for 19, while Robyn Marment claimed 2 for 44, as West sealed victory to continue their perfect start to the campaign.
Meanwhile, the Sunday XI suffered defeat away to Ayr despite a spirited performance from all involved at Cambusdoon. On a warm afternoon on the west coast, the hosts posted 262 from their 40 overs, although West continued to battle throughout the innings. Wickets were shared across the bowling attack, while captain Rizwan Hussain produced two outstanding catches in the field to help keep Ayr’s scoring in check . In reply, several batters made starts against a disciplined Ayr attack with 3rd XI vice captain Manish Kaushik leading the resistance with an impressive 28 but the visitors were ultimately unable to build the partnerships required to seriously threaten the target.
