The Roon’d-up: West dodge the rain to return to winning ways
The Roon’d-Up is our regular summary of events on the field at West over the 2025 season. We’ll cover all the results as well as outstanding and notable performances throughout the season to keep you up to date on the latest goings on at Hamilton Crescent.
Rain dominated much of the Western District Cricket League action this weekend but our first team recorded a convicing win.
Facing Irvine at Hamilton Crescent, the West of Scotland XI secured a convincing 102-run victory, built on key partnerships and a disciplined team bowling effort. Having elected to bat on a cold, grey day in Glasgow, West were in early trouble at 12 for 2 in the fifth over. Sam Jakobsen and Larvert Masanda (27) began the recovery with a steady 66-run partnership before Jakobsen fell for 28. Irvine spinner Damien Bouwer then sparked a collapse, finishing with an impressive five-wicket haul as West stumbled to 119 for 7. Crucially, skipper James Fennah (37) and Dave McNulty (35) added 64 for the eighth wicket, helping West post a competitive total of 193 all out. In reply, Irvine never settled. Their top-scorer, opener David Ingram, managed just 17 as West’s bowlers shared the spoils in a dominant display. Laurie Kitchen, Oscar Shepperson and Callum Dutia claimed two wickets apiece, with further support from Fennah, McNulty, and Mills to bowl Irvine out for just 91. The result consolidates West’s position in second place in the Western Premiership Two, just behind Renfrew, whose match at Langside was cancelled due to rain.
Meanwhile, both Partick, who were due to play Bothwell in Uddingston, and Hamilton Crescent, set to face Woodfarm in Giffnock, were thwarted by inclement weather, with their games cancelled without a ball being bowled.
The rain persisted on Sunday, but it did little to dampen the spirit of remembrance as current and former West players gathered to celebrate the life of John Allan Cameron. 29 overs were bowled, with the XL Club side reaching 74 for 6, despite the challenging conditions. However, the day was about far more than cricket, serving as a heartfelt memorial for Cammy, highlighted by the planting of a commemorative tree within the Hamilton Crescent grounds and a raffle in support of St Margaret’s Hospice.
Partick return to Greenwood Trophy action on Tuesday, facing Woodfarm at home, first ball at 6pm.
