West of Scotland CC have a proud history of commitment to the development of cricket in the region, starting with our junior section. Alan Mills and Jim Young, both previous Junior Conveners at the club, were crucial to the success of the Junior section at West.

Juniors at West are given a comprehensive education in playing the sport, the opportunity to excel in all disciplines whilst competing in a fun environment. The West Way is designed to equip young players to compete in a way that reflects the way the fast paced way the game is played in the modern era.

We currently have at least one junior team playing at every level of the WDJCU set up as well as running the ECB’s exciting new All Stars and Dynamos programmes. We have over 60 junior playing members and are proud to have players represented in all of the regional squads.

Our commitment to inclusion and diversity is reflected in our junior membership and our ambition is to be the first club in the region to have an all girls squad to match our achievement of being the first club in the region to field a stand alone Women’s XI in the Women’s Premier League.

Our junior set up currently trains on Monday and Friday night and delivered by our dynamic and growing coaching team.

If you are interested in your child getting involved in cricket, please get in touch.

All Stars

In 2019 West were proud to deliver the ECB’s All Stars programme. All Stars is for children between the ages of 5-8 years old. The programme is aimed at introducing children to cricket in a fun and safe environment.

Dynamos

Dynamo’s is a new ECB programme that builds on the success of All Stars. It is aimed at increasing participation in cricket and the format is linked to The Hundred. Dynamo’s is aimed at children aged 8-10 years old.

Our Under 12s teams play both soft and hard ball cricket. Playing both allows players new to the sport to learn the game in a safe environment whilst allowing the more experienced players at this age to get their first taste of competitive hard ball cricket.

Under 14s

West currently has a standalone Under 14s team that competes in the WDCU Under 14 league. Our Under 14s aim to embed their cricket skills that they have developed throughout their early junior phase. We are committed to developing all of our junior players to achieve their potential with many getting their first taste of senior cricket through our Development XI and sometimes Saturday League Cricket at this age. Two of our current Under 14s are part of the regional squad at this age group with another one in each of the Girls Under 15s Regional Squad and Regional Junior Development Squad.

Under 16s

West currently has a standalone Under 16s team that compete in the WDCU Under 16s league. Our Under 16s aim to be competitive in their own right and are encouraged to implement the skills and style of play developed across the West junior set up. Our Under 16 players who wish to play senior cricket are given opportunities to play adult cricket at a level that suits their ability with a selection policy that reflects our commitment to this. Two of our current Under 16s are in the regional squad for this age group with a further one in the Regional Junior Development Squad.

Representative Cricket

The Western Warriors’ junior set up provides opportunity for those players selected to show their skills against the Eastern Knights and Caledonian Highlanders. From there, players may be selected for the relevant Scotland national age group side. Places in these representative sides are often decided through a series of trials or noticeable performances for the club. In the past, the club have produced many regional and international players who have gone on to play cricket professionally. These include Gavin Main, Andrew Umeed, Craig Wright and Moneeb Iqbal.

Currently at West of Scotland we have several junior players involved with representative cricket.
